RESUMO

Non-invasive delivery of drugs is important for the reversal of respiratory diseases essentially by-passing metabolic pathways and targeting large surface area of drug absorption. Here, we study the inhalation of a redox nano medicine namely citrate functionalized Mn3O4 (C-Mn3O4) duly encapsulated in droplet evaporated aerosols for the balancing of oxidative stress generated by the exposure of Chromium (VI) ion, a potential lung carcinogenic agent. Our optical spectroscopic in-vitro experiments demonstrates the efficacy of redox balancing of the encapsulated nanoparticles (NP) for the maintenance of a homeostatic condition. The formation of Cr-NP complex as an excretion of the heavy metal is also demonstrated through optical spectroscopic and high resolution transmission optical microscopy (HRTEM). Our studies confirm the oxidative stress mitigation activity of the Cr-NP complex. A detailed immunological assay followed by histopathological studies and assessment of mitochondrial parameters in pre-clinical mice model with chromium (Cr) induced lung inflammation establishes the mechanism of drug action to be redox-buffering. Thus, localised delivery of C-Mn3O4 NPs in the respiratory tract via aerosols can act as an effective nanotherapeutic agent against oxidative stress induced lung inflammation.

The aus (Oryza sativa L.) varietal group comprises of aus, boro, ashina and rayada seasonal and/or field ecotypes, and exhibits unique stress tolerance traits, making it valuable for rice breeding. Despite its importance, the agro-morphological diversity and genetic control of yield traits in aus rice remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the genetic structure of 181 aus accessions using 399,115 SNP markers and evaluated them for 11 morpho-agronomic traits. Through genome-wide association studies (GWAS), we aimed to identify key loci controlling yield and plant architectural traits.Our population genetic analysis unveiled six subpopulations with strong geographical patterns. Subpopulation-specific differences were observed in most phenotypic traits. Principal component analysis (PCA) of agronomic traits showed that principal component 1 (PC1) was primarily associated with panicle traits, plant height, and heading date, while PC2 and PC3 were linked to primary grain yield traits. GWAS using PC1 identified OsSAC1 on Chromosome 7 as a significant gene influencing multiple agronomic traits. PC2-based GWAS highlighted the importance of OsGLT1 and OsPUP4/ Big Grain 3 in determining grain yield. Haplotype analysis of these genes in the 3,000 Rice Genome Panel revealed distinct genetic variations in aus rice.In summary, this study offers valuable insights into the genetic structure and phenotypic diversity of aus rice accessions. We have identified significant loci associated with essential agronomic traits, with GLT1, PUP4, and SAC1 genes emerging as key players in yield determination.

Glycated hemoglobin (GHb) found in mammals undergoes irreversible damage when exposed to external redox agents, which is much more vulnerable than its normal counterpart hemoglobin (Hb). Besides the oxygen regulation throughout the body, Hb plays a vital role in balancing immunological health and the redox cycle. Photoinduced ultra-fast electron transfer phenomena actively participate in regulation of various kind of homeostasis involved in such biomacromolecules. In the present study we have shown that a well-known mutagen Ethidium Bromide (EtBr) reduces GHb in femtosecond time scale (efficiently) upon photoexcitation after efficient recognition in the biomolecule. We have performed similar experiment by colocalizing EtBr and Iron (Fe(III)) on the micellar surface as Hb mimic in order to study the excited state EtBr dynamics to rationalize the time scale obtained from EtBr in GHb and Hb. While other experimental techniques including Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Zeta potential, absorbance and emission spectroscopy have been employed for the confirmation of structural perturbation of GHb compared to Hb, a detailed computational studies involving molecular docking and density functional theory (DFT) have been employed for the explanation of the experimental observations.

BACKGROUND: A previous term (≥37 weeks' gestation), full-dilatation cesarean delivery is associated with an increased risk for a subsequent spontaneous preterm birth. The mechanism is unknown. We hypothesized that the cesarean delivery scar characteristics and scar position relative to the internal cervical os may compromise cervical function, thereby leading to shortening of the cervical length and spontaneous preterm birth. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the relationship of cesarean delivery scar characteristics and position, assessed by transvaginal ultrasound, in pregnant women with previous full-dilatation cesarean delivery with the risk of shortening cervical length and spontaneous preterm birth. STUDY DESIGN: This was a single-center, prospective cohort study of singleton pregnant women (14 to 24 weeks' gestation) with a previous term full-dilatation cesarean delivery who attended a high-risk preterm birth surveillance clinic (2017-2021). Women underwent transvaginal ultrasound assessment of cervical length, cesarean delivery scar distance relative to the internal cervical os, and scar niche parameters using a reproducible transvaginal ultrasound technique. Spontaneous preterm birth prophylactic interventions (vaginal cervical cerclage or vaginal progesterone) were offered for short cervical length (≤25 mm) and to women with a history of spontaneous preterm birth or late miscarriage after full-dilatation cesarean delivery. The primary outcome was spontaneous preterm birth; secondary outcomes included short cervical length and a need for prophylactic interventions. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to develop multiparameter models that combined cesarean delivery scar parameters, cervical length, history of full-dilatation cesarean delivery, and maternal characteristics. The predictive performance of models was examined using the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve and the detection rate at various fixed false positive rates. The optimal cutoff for cesarean delivery scar distance to best predict a short cervical length and spontaneous preterm birth was analyzed. RESULTS: Cesarean delivery scars were visualized in 90.5% (220/243) of the included women. The spontaneous preterm birth rate was 4.1% (10/243), and 12.8% (31/243) of women developed a short cervical length. A history- (n=4) or ultrasound-indicated (n=19) cervical cerclage was performed in 23 of 243 (9.5%) women; among those, 2 (8.7%) spontaneously delivered prematurely. A multiparameter model based on absolute scar distance from the internal os best predicted spontaneous preterm birth (area under the receiver operating characteristics curve, 0.73; 95% confidence interval, 0.57-0.89; detection rate of 60% for a fixed 25% false positive rate). Models based on the relative anatomic position of the cesarean delivery scar to the internal os and the cesarean delivery scar position with niche parameters (length, depth, and width) best predicted the development of a short cervical length (area under the receiver operating characteristics curve, 0.79 [95% confidence interval, 0.71-0.87]; and 0.81 [95% confidence interval, 0.73-0.89], respectively; detection rate of 73% at a fixed 25% false positive rate). Spontaneous preterm birth was significantly more likely when the cesarean delivery scar was <5.0 mm above or below the internal os (adjusted odds ratio, 6.87; 95% confidence interval, 1.34-58; P =.035). CONCLUSION: In pregnancies following a full-dilatation cesarean delivery, cesarean delivery scar characteristics and distance from the internal os identified women who were at risk for spontaneous preterm birth and developing short cervical length. Overall, the spontaneous preterm birth rate was low, but it was significantly increased among women with a scar located <5.0 mm above or below the internal cervical os. Shortening of cervical length was strongly associated with a low scar position. Our novel findings indicate that a low cesarean delivery scar can compromise the functional integrity of the internal cervical os, leading to cervical shortening and/or spontaneous preterm birth. Assessment of the cesarean delivery scar characteristics and position seem to have use in preterm birth clinical surveillance among women with a previous, full-dilatation cesarean delivery and could better identify women who would benefit from prophylactic interventions.

Cellulases are enzymes that aid in the hydrolysis of cellulosic fibers and have a wide range of industrial uses. In the present in silico study, sequence alignment between cellulases from different Bacillus species revealed that most of the residues are conserved in those aligned enzymes. Three dimensional structures of cellulase enzymes from 23 different Bacillus species have been predicted and based on the alignment between the modeled structures, those enzymes have been categorized into 7 different groups according to the homology in their conformational folds. There are two structural contents in Gr-I cellulase namely ß1-α2 and ß3-α5 loops which varies greatly according to their static position. Molecular docking study between the B. albus cellulase and its various cellulosic substrates including xylanoglucan oligosaccharides revealed that residues viz. Phe154, Tyr258, Tyr282, Tyr285, and Tyr376 of B. albus cellulase are significantly involved in formation stacking interaction during enzyme-substrate binding. Residue interaction network and binding energy analysis for the B. albus cellulase with different cellulosic substrates depicted the strong affinity of XylGlc3 substrate with the receptor enzyme. Molecular interaction and molecular dynamics simulation studies exhibited structural stability of enzyme-substrate complexes which are greatly influenced by the presence of catalytic promiscuity in their substrate binding sites. Screening of B. albus in carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and xylan supplemented agar media revealed the capability of the bacterium in degrading both cellulose and xylan. Overall, the study demonstrated B. albus cellulase as an effective biocatalyst candidate with the potential role of catalytic promiscuity for possible applications in biofuel industries.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. The recent prediction of diabetes to be a global pandemic invites a detection strategy preferably non-invasive, and bloodless to manage the disease and the associated complications. Here, we have synthesized chitosan polymer functionalized, organic-inorganic bio-compatible nano-hybrids of Mn3O4 nanoparticles, and characterized it by utilizing several optical methodologies for the structural characterization which shows the Michaelis Menten (MM) kinetics for glucose and alpha-amylase protein (well-known diabetes biomarkers). We have also studied the potentiality for the detection of alpha-amylase in human salivary secretion which is reported to be strongly correlated with uncontrolled hyperglycemia. Finally, we have developed a prototype for the measurement of glucose (LOD of 0.38 mg/dL, LOQ of 1.15 mg/dL) and HbA1c (LOD of 0.15% and LOQ of 0.45%) utilizing the basic knowledge in the study for the detection of uncontrolled hyperglycemia at the point-of-care. With the limited number of clinical trials, we have explored the potential of our work in combating the diabetic pandemic across the globe in near future.

The ultimate driving force, stress, promotes adaptability/evolution in proliferating organisms, transforming tumorigenic growth. Estradiol (E2) regulates both phenomena. In this study, bioinformatics-tools, site-directed-mutagenesis (human estrogen-sulfotransferase/hSULT1E1), HepG2 cells tested with N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC/thiol-inducer) or buthionine-sulfoxamine (BSO/thiol-depletory) were evaluated for hSULT1E1 (estradiol-sulphating/inactivating) functions. Reciprocal redox regulation of steroid sulfatase (STS, E2-desulfating/activating) results in the Cys-formylglycine transition by the formylglycine-forming enzyme (FGE). The enzyme sequences and structures were examined across the phylogeny. Motif/domain and the catalytic conserve sequences and protein-surface-topography (CASTp) were investigated. The E2 binding to SULT1E1 suggests that the conserved-catalytic-domain in this enzyme has critical Cysteine 83 at position. This is strongly supported by site-directed mutagenesis/HepG2-cell research. Molecular-docking and superimposition studies of E2 with the SULT1E1 of representative species and to STS reinforce this hypothesis. SULT1E1-STS are reciprocally activated in response to the cellular-redox-environment by the critical Cys of these two enzymes. The importance of E2 in organism/species proliferation and tissue tumorigenesis is highlighted.

Following the seminal discovery of Richard Feynman, several micromachines have been made that are capable of several applications, such as solar energy harvesting, remediation of environmental pollution, etc. Here we have synthesized a nanohybrid combining TiO2 nanoparticle and light harvesting robust organic molecule RK1 (2-cyano-3-(4-(7-(5-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-4-octylthiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5] thiadiazol-4-yl)phenyl) acrylic acid) as a model micromachine having solar light harvesting ability potential for application in photocatalysis, preparation of solar active devices, etc. Detailed structural characterization, including High Resolution Transmission Electronic Microscopy (HRTEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), has been performed on the nanohybrid. We have studied the excited-state ultrafast dynamics of the efficient push-pull dye RK1 in solution, on mesoporous semiconductor nanoparticles, and in insulator nanoparticles by streak camera (resolution of the order of 500 fs). The dynamics of such photosensitizers in polar solvents have been reported, and it has been observed that completely different dynamics occur when they are attached to the surface of the semiconductor/insulator nanosurface. A femtosecond-resolved fast electron transfer has been reported when photosensitizer RK1 has been attached to the surface of the semiconductor nanoparticle, which in turn plays a crucial role in the development of an efficient light harvesting material. The generation of reactive oxygen species as a result of femtosecond-resolved photoinduced electron injection in the aqueous medium is also investigated in order to explore the possibility of redox-active micromachines, which are found to be crucial for efficient and enhanced photocatalysis.

Even in the era of smart technologies and IoT enabled devices, tea testing technique continues to be a person specific subjective task. In this study, we have employed optical spectroscopy-based detection technique for the quantitative validation of tea quality. In this regard, we have employed the external quantum yield of quercetin at 450 nm (λex = 360 nm), which is an enzymatic product generated by the activity of ß-glucosidase on rutin, a naturally occurring metabolite responsible for tea-flavour (quality). We have found that a specific point in a graph representing Optical Density and external Quantum Yield as independent and dependent variables respectively of an aqueous tea extract objectively indicates a specific variety of the tea. A variety of tea samples from various geographical origin have been analysed with the developed technique and found to be useful for the tea quality assessment. The principal component analysis distinctly showed the tea samples originated from Nepal and Darjeeling having similar external quantum yield, while the tea samples from Assam region had a lower external quantum yield. Furthermore, we have employed experimental and computational biology techniques for the detection of adulteration and health benefit of the tea extracts. In order to assure the portability/field use, we have also developed a prototype which confirms the results obtained in the laboratory. We are of the opinion that the simple user interface and almost zero maintenance cost of the device will make it useful and attractive with minimally trained manpower at low resource setting.

The mounting evidence of bacterial resistance against commonly prescribed antibiotics warrants the development of new antibacterial drugs on an urgent basis. Linezolid, an oxazolidinone antibiotic, is a lead molecule in designing new oxazolidinones as antibacterial agents. In this study, we report the antibacterial potential of the novel oxazolidinone-sulphonamide/amide conjugates that were recently reported by our research group. The antibacterial assays showed that, from the series, oxazolidinones 2 and 3a exhibited excellent potency (MIC of 1.17 µg/mL) against B. subtilis and P. aeruginosa strains, along with good antibiofilm activity. Docking studies revealed higher binding affinities of oxazolidinones 2 and 3a compared to linezolid, which were further validated by molecular dynamics simulations. In addition to this, other computational studies, one-descriptor (log P) analysis, ADME-T and drug likeness studies demonstrated the potential of these novel linezolid-based oxazolidinones to be taken forward for further studies.

This paper represents the synthesis, characterization and validation of a cobalt chloride functionalised nano-porous cellulose membrane, a unique sensor for non-contact measurement of water potential in various biomedical and environmentally important matrices. The developed nano sensor, along with associated electronic components, is assembled as a prototype device called "MEGH" (Measuring Essential Good Hydration) to measure essential hydration of matrices of both environmental and biomedical importance, including soil and human skin. The relative humidity above the soil surface in equilibrium with the soil moisture has been studied for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic soil types. Our studies confirm that the percentage of water available to plants is greater in hydrophobic soil rather than in hydrophilic soil, which has also been corroborated using simulation studies. Furthermore, the requirement of hydration in human skin has also been evaluated by measuring the water potential of both dry and moist skin.

The study was aimed to evaluate the performance of a newly developed spectroscopy-based non-invasive and noncontact device (SAMIRA) for the simultaneous measurement of hemoglobin, bilirubin and oxygen saturation as an alternative to the invasive biochemical method of blood sampling. The accuracy of the device was assessed in 4318 neonates having incidences of either anemia, jaundice, or hypoxia. Transcutaneous bilirubin, hemoglobin and blood saturation values were obtained by the newly developed instrument which was corroborated with the biochemical blood tests by expert clinicians. The instrument is trained using Artificial Neural Network Analysis to increase the acceptability of the data. The artificial intelligence incorporated within the instrument determines the disease condition of the neonate. The Pearson's correlation coefficient, r was found to be 0.987 for hemoglobin estimation and 0.988 for bilirubin and blood gas saturation respectively. The bias and the limits of agreement for the measurement of all the three parameters were within the clinically acceptance limit.

In the last 3 years of the pandemic situation, SARS-CoV-2 caused a significant number of deaths. Infection rates for symptomatic and asymptomatic patients are higher than that for death. Eventually, researchers explored that the major deaths are attributed to several comorbidity factors. The confounding factors and gender-associated infection/death rate are observed globally. This suggests that SARS-CoV-2 selects the human system recognizing the internal comorbid environment. This article explored the influences of hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular, and renovascular disorders in COVID-19 severity and mortality. Brief mechanistic layouts have been presented here, indicating some of the comorbidity as the critical determinant in the COVID-19 pathogenesis and related mortality.

This study reports a simple template-based reverse transcription-polymerase amplification assay (ST-RT-RPA) for detection of citrus tristeza virus (CTV) from crude plant extract lysed in NaOH:EDTA (1:1) without the need of tedious RNA isolation. The developed assay showed versatility in its usage as amplification can be performed at wide temperature range (14°C to 42°C) and incubation time (4 to 32 min), although the best conditions were 38°C for 30 min. The developed ST-RT-RPA assay could detect the CTV up to 10-8 dilution of crude plant extract of NaOH:EDTA and up to 0.01 fg µl-1 of RNA of CTV-infected plant tissues and 0.001 ag µl-1 of plasmid DNA containing viral insert, thus exhibiting sufficient sensitivity. ST-RT-RPA assay showed high specificity without any cross-reaction with other citrus pathogens (Indian citrus ringspot virus, citrus yellow mosaic virus, citrus yellow vein clearing virus, and Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus) and was more sensitive in detection of CTV infection in field samples as compared to standard reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with later showing false negative in 7.92% of samples tested after 1 week of sampling. The developed ST-RT-RPA assay used minimally processed crude plant extract as template, tolerant to sample degradation in transit and storage, while it can be easily performed at wide temperatures and could be adopted in resource-poor setup.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) primarily affecting the synovial tissue, has emerged as a major concern leading to the pressing need to develop effective treatment strategies. In the affected synovial tissue, resident macrophages play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of RA. TNF-α and IL-1ß released from pro-inflammatory M1 synovial macrophages are the master regulators of chronic joint inflammation. In this study collagen-induced rheumatoid arthritis model was developed in mice and post isolation, macrophages were subjected to administration with neutralizing antibodies IL1R and TNFR1 either alone or in combination. Flow cytometric analysis followed by Western blots, ROS, and IL-1ß, TNF-α release assays were performed. Outcomes suggested that post-dual blockade of IL1R and TNFR1 arthritic synovial macrophages showed a shifting of the M1 towards the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. Moreover, the switch towards the M2 phenotype might be responsible for decreased levels of IL-1ß,TNF-α, and ROS and simultaneous elevation in the activity of antioxidant enzymes like SOD, CAT, and GPX content in the isolated macrophages. Simultaneous blocking of both IL1R and TNFR1 also showed a sharp reduction in the expression of NF-κB and SAPK-JNK. The elevated arginase and GRX activity further confirmed the polarization towards M2. Moreover, bioinformatics analysis was performed,and it was found that blocking TNFR1 with an antibody could hamper the binding of TNF to TNFR1 in the TNF-TNFR1 pathway. Thus, it may be inferred that dual blockade of IL1R and TNFR1 and a suitable antibody blocking of TNFR1 might be alternative therapeutic approaches for the regulation of RA-induced inflammation in the future.

The deteriorating water environment worldwide, mainly due to population explosion and uncontrolled direct disposal of harmful industrial and farming wastes, earnestly demands new approaches and accurate technologies to monitor water quality before consumption overcoming the shortcomings of the current methodologies. A spectroscopic water quality monitoring and early-warning instrument for evaluating acute water toxicity are the need of the hour. In this study, we have developed a prototype capable of the quantification of dissolved organic matter, dissolved chemicals, and suspended particulate matter in trace amounts dissolved in the water. The prototype estimates the water quality of the samples by measuring the absorbance, fluorescence, and scattering of the impurities simultaneously. The performance of the instrument was evaluated by detecting common water pollutants such as Benzopyrene, Crystal Violet, and Titanium di-oxide. The limit of detection values was found to be 0.50, 23.9, and 23.2 ppb (0.29 µM), respectively.

Anti-microbial resistant infection is predicted to be alarming in upcoming years. In the present study, we proposed co-localization of two model drugs viz., rifampicin and benzothiazole used in anti-tuberculosis and anti-fungal agents respectively in a nanoscopic cationic micelle (cetyl triethyl ammonium bromide) with hydrodynamic diameter of 2.69 nm. Sterilization effect of the co-localized micellar formulation against a model multi-drug resistant bacterial strain viz., Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus was also investigated. 99.88% decrease of bacterial growth in terms of colony forming unit was observed using the developed formulation. While Dynamic Light Scattering and Forsters Resonance Energy Transfer between benzothiazole and rifampicin show co-localization of the drugs in the nanoscopic micellar environment, analysis of time-resolved fluorescence decays by Infelta-Tachiya model and the probability distribution of the donor-acceptor distance fluctuations for 5 µM,10 µM and 15 µM acceptor concentrations confirm efficacy of the co-localization. Energy transfer efficiency and the donor acceptor distance are found to be 46% and 20.9 Å respectively. We have also used a detailed computational biology framework to rationalize the sterilization effect of our indigenous formulation. It has to be noted that the drugs used in our studies are not being used for their conventional indication. Rather the co-localization of the drugs in the micellar environment shows a completely different indication of their use in the remediation of multi-drug resistant bacteria revealing the re-purposing of the drugs for potential use in hospital-born multi-drug resistant bacterial infection.

Toxicity induced by inorganic arsenic as AsO33- (iAsIII) is of global concern. Reliable detection of the maximum allowed contaminant level for arsenic in drinking water and in the cellular system remains a challenge for the water quality management and assessment of toxicity in the cellular milieu, respectively. A new Ir(III)-based phosphorescent molecule (AS-1; λExt = 415 nm and λEms = 600 nm, Φ = 0.3) is synthesized for the selective detection of iAsIII in an aqueous solution with a ratiometric luminescence response even in the presence of iAsV and all other common inorganic cations and anions. The relatively higher affinity of the thioimidazole ligand (HPBT) toward iAsIII led to the formation of a fluorescent molecule iAsV-HPBT (λExt = 415 nm and λEms = 466 nm, Φ = 0.28) for the reaction of iAsIII and AS-1. An improved limit of quantitation (LOQ) down to 0.2 ppb is achieved when AS-1 is used in the CTAB micellar system. Presumably, the cationic surfactants favor the localization of AS-1@CTABMicelle in mitochondria of MCF7 cells, and this is confirmed from the images of the confocal laser fluorescence scanning microscopic studies. Importantly, cell viability assay studies confirm that AS-1@CTABMicelle induces dose-dependent detoxification of iAsIII in live cells. Further, luminescence responses at 466 nm could be utilized for developing a hand-held device for the in-field application. Such a reagent that allows for ratiometric detection of iAsIII with LOQ of 2.6 nM (0.5 ppb) in water, as well as helps in visualizing its distribution in mitochondria with a detoxifying effect, is rather unique in contemporary literature.

OBJECTIVES: Primary objective was to study the clinicodemographic profile of hospitalised COVID-19 patients at a tertiary-care centre in India. Secondary objective was to identify predictors of poor outcome. SETTING: Single centre tertiary-care level. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: Consecutively hospitalised adults patients with COVID-19. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Primary outcome variable was in-hospital mortality. Covariables were known comorbidities, clinical features, vital signs at the time of admission and on days 3-5 of admission, and initial laboratory investigations. RESULTS: Intergroup differences were tested using χ2 or Fischer's exact tests, Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney U test. Predictors of mortality were evaluated using multivariate logistic regression model. Out of 4102 SARS-CoV-2 positive patients admitted during 1-year period, 3268 (79.66%) survived to discharge and 834 (20.33%) died in the hospital. Mortality rates increased with age. Death was more common among males (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.25 to 1.81). Out of 261 cases analysed in detail, 55.1% were in mild, 32.5% in moderate and 12.2% in severe triage category. Most common clinical presentations in the subgroup were fever (73.2%), cough/coryza (65.5%) and breathlessness (54%). Hypertension (45.2%), diabetes mellitus (41.8%) and chronic kidney disease (CKD; 6.1%) were common comorbidities. Disease severity on admission (adjusted OR 12.53, 95% CI 4.92 to 31.91, p<0.01), coagulation defect (33.21, 3.85-302.1, p<0.01), CKD (5.67, 1.08-29.64, p=0.04), high urea (11.05, 3.9-31.02, p<0.01), high prothrombin time (3.91, 1.59-9.65, p<0.01) and elevated ferritin (1.02, 1.00-1.03, p=0.02) were associated with poor outcome on multivariate regression. A strong predictor of mortality was disease progression on days 3-5 of admission (adjusted OR 13.66 95% CI 3.47 to 53.68). CONCLUSION: COVID-19 related mortality in hospitalised adult patients at our center was similar to the developed countries. Progression in disease severity on days 3-5 of admission or days 6-13 of illness onset acts as 'turning point' for timely referral or treatment intensification for optimum use of resources.

We developed an integrated device composed of a single-probe Electroencephalogram (EEG) and Charge Coupled Device (CCD) based motion sensors for objective measurement of Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). While the measurement of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (MAHD) relies on the EEG signal for the assessment of attention during a given structured task, the CCD sensor depicts the movement pattern of the subjects engaged in a continuous performance task. A statistical analysis of attention and movement patterns was performed, and the accuracy of completed tasks was analyzed using indigenously developed software. The device with the embedded software is intended to improve certainty with criterion E. We used the EEG signal from a single-channel dry sensor placed on the frontal lobe of the head of the subjects (3-5 year old pre-schoolers). During the performance of the task power for delta and beta, EEG waves from the subjects are found to be correlated with relaxation and attention/cognitive load conditions. While the relaxation condition of the subject hints at hyperactivity, a more direct CCD-based motion sensor is used to track the physical movement of the subject engaged in a continuous performance task. We used our indigenously developed software for statistical analysis to derive a scale for the objective assessment of ADHD. We also compared our scale with clinical ADHD evaluations and found a significant correlation between the objective assessment of the ADHD subjects and the clinician's conventional evaluation. MAHD, the integrated device, is supposed to be an auxiliary tool to improve the accuracy of ADHD diagnosis by supporting greater criterion E certainty.
